A Journey of Recovery and Resilience at Simblija Care Home
July 16, 2024
Ms. Georgette Cardona recently chose Simblija Care Home for a short stay to recover after undergoing a total hip replacement. Her decision to stay at Simblija was the result of thorough research and a desire to regain her strength in a supportive environment close to her home in Qormi.
Born and raised in Qormi in 1955, Ms. Cardona’s early years were spent in San Gorg before her family moved to San Bastjan. Throughout her life, she has cherished the vibrant festivities in Qormi, celebrating both feasts in the village. The festive atmosphere continues to bring her immense joy, even though she does not actively participate.
At Simblija, Ms. Cardona quickly embraced the variety of activities organised by our Activity Coordinator, Fiona Debattista. From card games and exercise sessions to weekly entertainment, she found these activities not only enjoyable but also essential for her social well-being. For Ms. Cardona, social interaction is crucial. She recalls a time when 19 years ago she spent three years barely leaving the house after losing her husband. During the few times she would go to socialise with locals, were some of the happiest moments during such a dark time where she felt more herself than she had in years. When talking about her late husband, Johnny, Ms Cardona recounts meeting him during the feast celebrations of San Bastjan before the march, 55 years ago, which brought fond memories back and subsequently a delightful smile on her face.
Now at 69 years old, Ms. Cardona is a mother of three, a grandmother of seven, and a great-grandmother of one, as of January 2023. She values the closeness within her family above all else, a principle she has instilled in her children and hopes will be passed down through generations. Raised in a disciplined household, Ms. Cardona ensured these values were central in her own family.
Choosing Simblija Care Home was a carefully considered decision. Ms. Cardona wanted to recover in a place where she could regain her independence. She received full support from her three sons, Fabien, Ludovic, and Johan, who she is sure would have taken care of her. However, she wished to minimise the burden on their lives, a sentiment that influenced her decision to stay at Simblija. With 24/7 staff availability and access to all necessary amenities, Ms. Cardona found comfort in knowing she was in good hands, which also reassured her family.
Despite not knowing anyone at Simblija before her arrival, Ms. Cardona quickly made many new friends. Describing herself as sociable and willing to talk to anyone, she believes that even a simple greeting can brighten someone’s day. Her friendly nature has made her a well-liked resident at Simblija.
Reflecting on her life experiences, Ms. Cardona shares a piece of wisdom: “Be good to people, help where you need to, and keep God and your family close. There’s nothing more beautiful than the gathering of family.” Her time at Simblija Care Home has not only aided her physical recovery but also reinforced the importance of community and family bonds in her life. Join us in wishing Ms Cardona a speedy recovery and a healthy road back to independent living.
