AX Group and AX Care unite for an Action-Packed Sports Day!

Our residents at Hilltop Gardens and Simblija Care Home enjoyed a fantastic Sports Day, made possible through AX Group’s corporate social responsibility efforts. Volunteers from AX Group Business Centre, AX Hotels and AX Construction Care came together for a day of fun, physical activity, and community spirit at Hilltop Gardens in Naxxar. The event focused on promoting active aging, with our residents eagerly taking part in a variety of games and interactive activities organised by our Activity Coordinator, Fiona Debattista with the support of the Care team and volunteers. Their enthusiasm was contagious, creating a vibrant and positive atmosphere that spread to the volunteers. Aligned with AX Group’s commitment to community wellness, the Revive Physiotherapy and Aquatic Centre team presented a taster session for the new ‘falls prevention program’ that will be soon added to the Centre’s service offering. This initiative not only showcased engaging physical activities but also underscored the vital role of health and safety for older adults. Participants were able to learn effective strategies for minimising fall risks while enjoying a day of camaraderie and fun. At Hilltop and Simblija, we take pride in organising activities that keep our residents active, engaged, and happy. Watching them participate with smiles and high energy was the highlight of the day for us. AX Care’s Director, Ms. Claire Zammit Xuereb, and General Manager, Ms. Natasha Azzopardi, were present throughout the event, showing their support and personally engaging with residents. They concluded the day with a celebratory medal ceremony, acknowledging and congratulating each participant for their involvement. This thoughtful gesture made the residents feel appreciated and further highlighted the teamwork and sense of community that the day was all about. This Sports Day is a reflection of AX Group’s dedication to supporting our residents by encouraging active lifestyles. We are grateful to the AX Group volunteers for their efforts in making this day so special.

A Journey of Recovery and Resilience at Simblija Care Home

Ms. Georgette Cardona recently chose Simblija Care Home for a short stay to recover after undergoing a total hip replacement. Her decision to stay at Simblija was the result of thorough research and a desire to regain her strength in a supportive environment close to her home in Qormi. Born and raised in Qormi in 1955, Ms. Cardona’s early years were spent in San Gorg before her family moved to San Bastjan. Throughout her life, she has cherished the vibrant festivities in Qormi, celebrating both feasts in the village. The festive atmosphere continues to bring her immense joy, even though she does not actively participate. At Simblija, Ms. Cardona quickly embraced the variety of activities organised by our Activity Coordinator, Fiona Debattista. From card games and exercise sessions to weekly entertainment, she found these activities not only enjoyable but also essential for her social well-being. For Ms. Cardona, social interaction is crucial. She recalls a time when 19 years ago she spent three years barely leaving the house after losing her husband. During the few times she would go to socialise with locals, were some of the happiest moments during such a dark time where she felt more herself than she had in years. When talking about her late husband, Johnny, Ms Cardona recounts meeting him during the feast celebrations of San Bastjan before the march, 55 years ago, which brought fond memories back and subsequently a delightful smile on her face. Now at 69 years old, Ms. Cardona is a mother of three, a grandmother of seven, and a great-grandmother of one, as of January 2023. She values the closeness within her family above all else, a principle she has instilled in her children and hopes will be passed down through generations. Raised in a disciplined household, Ms. Cardona ensured these values were central in her own family. Choosing Simblija Care Home was a carefully considered decision. Ms. Cardona wanted to recover in a place where she could regain her independence. She received full support from her three sons, Fabien, Ludovic, and Johan, who she is sure would have taken care of her. However, she wished to minimise the burden on their lives, a sentiment that influenced her decision to stay at Simblija. With 24/7 staff availability and access to all necessary amenities, Ms. Cardona found comfort in knowing she was in good hands, which also reassured her family. Despite not knowing anyone at Simblija before her arrival, Ms. Cardona quickly made many new friends. Describing herself as sociable and willing to talk to anyone, she believes that even a simple greeting can brighten someone’s day. Her friendly nature has made her a well-liked resident at Simblija. Reflecting on her life experiences, Ms. Cardona shares a piece of wisdom: "Be good to people, help where you need to, and keep God and your family close. There’s nothing more beautiful than the gathering of family." Her time at Simblija Care Home has not only aided her physical recovery but also reinforced the importance of community and family bonds in her life. Join us in wishing Ms Cardona a speedy recovery and a healthy road back to independent living.

The Benefits of Swimming for the Elderly

As we get older, maintaining an active lifestyle becomes increasingly important for both physical and mental well-being. One of the most effective and enjoyable forms of exercise for the elderly is swimming. At Simblija Care Home, we are dedicated to promoting the health and happiness of our residents. We are proud to offer access to our state-of-the-art indoor hydrotherapy pool at Revive Physio, located conveniently within our premises. Residents can experience the myriad benefits of swimming and hydrotherapy by booking a session in our specialised facility. Physical Health Benefits Low-Impact Exercise: Swimming is a low-impact activity that is gentle on the joints. The buoyancy of water supports the body, reducing stress on bones and joints, which is particularly beneficial for individuals with arthritis or other musculoskeletal conditions. This makes swimming an ideal exercise for seniors who may have difficulty with high-impact activities such as running or aerobics. Cardiovascular Health: Engaging in regular swimming sessions helps improve cardiovascular health by strengthening the heart and enhancing circulation. This can lead to better blood pressure control, reduced risk of heart disease, and overall improved heart function. Muscle Strength and Flexibility: The resistance provided by water helps to build and strengthen muscles. Swimming engages multiple muscle groups, leading to improved flexibility. This is crucial for maintaining mobility and reducing the risk of falls and injuries among the elderly. Weight Management: Swimming is an effective way to burn calories and manage weight. For elderly individuals, maintaining a healthy weight is important for reducing the strain on joints and preventing various health issues associated with obesity. Mental Health Benefits Stress Reduction: The soothing nature of water and the rhythmic movement of swimming can have a calming effect, helping to reduce stress and anxiety. The serene environment of our indoor hydrotherapy pool at Revive Physio offers a peaceful retreat for residents to unwind and relax. Improved Sleep: Regular physical activity, such as swimming, can improve sleep quality. Better sleep contributes to overall well-being and can enhance cognitive function, mood, and energy levels. Social Interaction: Swimming sessions provide an opportunity for social interaction with fellow residents. Building and maintaining social connections is vital for mental health, reducing feelings of loneliness, and fostering a sense of community. Unique Benefits of Hydrotherapy Hydrotherapy, which combines the therapeutic benefits of warm water and gentle exercise, is especially beneficial for the elderly. The warm water in our hydrotherapy pool at Revive Physio helps to relax muscles, reduce pain, and improve circulation. This can be particularly advantageous for individuals recovering from surgery or those dealing with chronic pain conditions. Accessing Our Hydrotherapy Pool Residents of Simblija Care Home can easily access the indoor hydrotherapy pool at Revive Physio. To ensure a personalised and safe experience, booking is required for each session. This allows our trained staff to prepare the pool and provide any necessary assistance, ensuring that each resident receives the full benefit of their time in the water. How to Book a Session Booking a session at the hydrotherapy pool is a straightforward process. Residents or their family members can contact our front desk reception directly. Our friendly staff will assist with scheduling a convenient time and answer any questions about the hydrotherapy services. At Simblija Care Home, our indoor hydrotherapy pool at Revive Physio provides a safe, therapeutic environment where residents can enjoy these benefits.
